3/4/2023 0 Comments Lighthouse keeper jobs 2011![]() Over the years I have attended a number of memorial ceremonies at Down East cemeteries paying tribute and honoring lighthouse keepers. Ingalls’ service is well known within the circle of lighthouse historians, perhaps more so because of its tragic end. Within those documents are letters from Eugene Ingalls, who served a short time at West Quoddy Head Lighthouse in Lubec. All of them are unique and have a past with plenty of stories to tell. Many are situated on the mainland, some on distant islands, many miles from shore, exposed and vulnerable. This should not be, for they were the essential workers of their time.Īlong the coastline of Maine there are 65 lighthouses, 57 of which are active. Are these refracted memories held within a beam of light from a lighthouse? Perhaps.Ī recent discovery of documents from the lighthouse on Monhegan Island triggered thoughts about those “keepers of the light” whose past deeds and lives go unnoticed and over time - their time - will be all but forgotten. ![]() Light skips across the water’s surface, touches it and moves on. I am warm and snug in a house with many windows and can easily watch the sea amid these socially distanced times. Given our winter days of staying safe, I look to the ocean. ![]() There will always be light.Īn imagined moment of a lighthouse keeper as he wakes in damp cold and darkness, again and again, with one job on his mind - bringing comfort to others by providing light. I lift the glass, light the wick, mumble in my dreary sleep, “Let there be light,” and there is light. I look at my hands, wretched, blistered, black from soot and oozing oil. A circular motion begins at the bottom of the rusted metal stairs and then swirls up step by step whistling darkness. I awake with the wind echoing in my ears. ![]() Viber’s encryption will come with varying levels of security, the company said, which will show up in the form of a color-coded lock on the right side of the screen.Ī grey lock will mean the conversation (voice or text) is fully encrypted. ![]() So the fact that Viber had not launched it until now - with only a gradual rather than universal roll out, and just weeks after WhatsApp’s news - is both a sign of the times (what users are increasingly wanting and demanding these days) but also a mark of just how competitive the messaging app landscape remains today, where everyone is making sure that no rival has more features that it does. Michael Shmilov, Viber’s COO, told TechCrunch that the company has been working on an end-to-end encryption feature for “years.” ![]() Today, just about every big messaging app encrypts your messages in transit, but more secure features like end-to-end encryption mean that service providers cannot access the message at any point at all. The new privacy features will work across Android, iOS, PCs and Mac desktops, with the encryption coming with the latest app update (6.0) and a reauthentication of the app (via QR Code) to turn the feature on. The company - founded in Israel and acquired by Japan’s Rakuten in 2014 - says the new services will be rolled out globally in the coming weeks, starting today in four countries where Viber centers most of its R&D: Brazil, Belarus, Israel and Thailand. Viber - a messaging app with 711 million+ users - today is introducing end-to-end encryption for all messages and calls on its platform, including group chats (you can chat with up to 200 people), and a way to ‘hide’ chats on your account alongside its existing expanded deleting function. Following WhatsApp’s move to add end-to-end encryption to its platform, another big messaging company is joining the wave of apps turning on expanded privacy features. 3/4/2023 0 Comments Joining the magic circle![]() The exam takes place in front of a panel of judges, and candidates must demonstrate their skills to members in a rehearsed act. 3/3/2023 0 Comments Hogwarts legacy cross platform![]() While the solution proved a good one, there were always some minor issues, such as witches and wizards dropping suitcases full of biting spellbooks or newt spleens all over the polished station floor, or disappearing through the solid barrier a little too loudly. There is no information on how exactly Hogwarts students were travelling during the period after the acquisition of the Hogwarts Express and the creation of the Hogsmeade station and before the creation of Platform 9¾ in the 1850s. It was only after Minister Orpington was appointed to the office ( 1849- 1855) that a solution was reached: a concealed platform would be added to the newly Muggle-built King's Cross Station, accessible only to witches and wizards. ![]() ![]() The Ministry, however, refrained from building a station in the middle of London, as that would stretch even the Muggles' notorious determination not to notice magic even when it was exploding in front of their faces. Īfter the Ministry of Magic had acquired the Hogwarts Express, under Minister Ottaline Gambol in 1830, they also built a railway station at Hogsmeade, as a necessary adjunct to the train. The brainchild of Minister Evangeline Orpington in the 1850s, Platform Nine and Three-Quarters was the first of the concealed wizarding platforms at King's Cross. Nobody returned to the platform, then, for months - until the end of term, when it once again filled with wizards and a wizened old guard sat by the archway back to the Muggle world, making sure everyone got home without attracting too much attention. įinally, at 11:00, a whistle sounded announcing the train's departure, and the hiss of the pistons filled the platform as the train began to move, creaking out of the station as family members stood on the platform and waved their children off to school. Steam from the scarlet engine flooded the platform as cats wound their way around the wizards' legs and owls hooted to each other, as hoardes of students and parents moved around through the steam "like dark ghosts", their voices carrying through the mist. Though the platform was normally only used six days a year (round trips for the beginning and end of term, as well as the Christmas and Easter holidays), the platform on those days was awash with activity. The platform also had a distinct smell - one which lifted the spirits of young wizards who, like Harry Potter, look forward each summer to the start of term. Over the scarlet steam train's billowing smoke, there was a sign announcing that the Hogwarts Express would depart at eleven o'clock. There, a look back at the barrier revealed it was instead a wrought-iron archway with the words "Platform Nine and Three-Quarters" on it. Through this barrier, of course, lay Platform Nine and Three-Quarters, home of the famous Hogwarts Express. The crowd was wizarding children, bearing enormous trunks and caged owls and other unusual pets, making their way toward - and then through - the solid metal barrier between platforms nine and ten. However, every 1 September, as the clock overhead approached eleven o'clock, and the InterCity 125 pulled into platform nine, a strange crowd turned the occasional Muggle head. It was a perfectly ordinary station, with big plastic numbers over each track and guards who had never heard of the Hogwarts School. In northwestern London lay King's Cross Station, a Muggle railway station that was one of the busiest in the city. It didn’t hurt, but it had to be done carefully so that none of the Muggles noticed you vanishing." - Harry Potter explaining how to enter the platform What you had to do was walk through the solid barrier dividing platforms nine and ten. The tricky part was getting onto platform nine and three-quarters, which wasn’t visible to the Muggle eye. " Harry had caught the Hogwarts Express the previous year. When returning from Platform Nine and Three-Quarters, there was a guard stationed just outside the ticket barrier, in order to regulate exits from the platform through the gate, in order to not alarm the Muggles. In order for someone to get onto Platform Nine and Three-Quarters, they had to walk directly at the apparently solid barrier dividing Platforms Nine and Ten. Magically concealed behind the barrier between Muggle Platforms Nine and Ten, this Platform was where Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry students boarded the Hogwarts Express every 1 September, in order to attend school. Platform Nine and Three-Quarters ( Platform 9¾) was a platform at King's Cross Station in London. It can be accessed by walking straight through the apparently solid barrier between platforms nine and ten." - Description of the platform's purpose and the means of entry " Platform nine and three-quarters is the train platform from which students board the Hogwarts Express, the scarlet steam engine that brings students to and from Hogwarts. The rest of the info (where to find downloads, current version of product (versionID), which update.xml to look at on server, etc.) is all outside the autoupdater app, which is cool and does what I need. That way our autoupdater app could simply be named "REVision Effects AutoUpdater" (our company name), and then the product name in the dialog box(es) could be displayed based on what's in the update.ini file instead of having it built into the autoupdater app. My question: What I'd like to do is create one auto-updater, and use the update.ini file for each product to specify the product name that appears in autoupdater program, instead of having to put the product name in an autoupdater.xml file that is used to build the autoupdater program(s). And many of those 37 products are supported on Mac, Win and Linux. I'm working with eval version of InstallBuilder and want to make a script that checks for all of our products in one go, one update check for each of our 37 products (okay, just the products that are installed on the customer's computer, but you get the point).
